"Arthur Croxton Smith, O.B.E., was born in 1865. He began his career in journalism in Northampton before going to London. After 1909 he specialized in writing about dogs, and contributed to many journals and wrote a number of books. He became a member of the Kennel Club in 1899. He was a founder member of the Association of Bloodhound Breeders and one of the first to encourage the use of dogs for police work. He was for several years chairman of the Tail-Waggers Club and of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. During the 1914-18 war he was Director of Publicity to the Ministry of Food and was awarded the O.B.E. He died in 1952."
